Answers:    if you have'nt got a memory card and your using a usb cable it wont work..you call for a bluetooth device...hope this helps

I have real problems beside mine.
Trick is to load the software beforehand plugging it in
Are you using Bluetooth or USB .? ..if its Bluetooth ...sort sure your Phone is Visible.et etc.. If it is via the cable ...it is sometimes a wee bit tempremental... try restarting the comp etc... best advise is to gain someone who is clued up to help you flawless luck
As they say above, you enjoy to install the software before plugging it into your PC.
Try removing it and re-installing from the disk.

Also, depends if you're trying to use it within File Transfer mode or Phone mode... if File transfer afterwards you need to download some extra drivers from www.sony-ericsson.co.uk

When i first get my phone I had to manually install the drivers from Device Manager, but on my brand new Pc I installed the software and it picked it up no problems.
USB cables for phones are not the most reliable of things. My warning is to buy a memory card (if you don't have one already) and a USB memory card reader. Once plugged surrounded by your pc will see it as an external thorny drive and you simply drag and drop files to wherever you inevitability them. Also, the Sony memory cards come formatted with separate folders for music, descriptions etc so it's even easier. One more positive thing is a multi card reader will ensure when you upgrade you won't hold ot bother installing mobile phone software time and time again
