Looking for a poem that ends - for she be a hose rat?

It's one that my father learned at academy; I guess that this means that it must by 1930's or ahead of time!

He told me this as a boy but I gave it no attention; presently that he's gone, it's one of the things that I remember and want to hold on to.

Thanks

SHELTER.

By the wide lake’s fringe I mark’d her lie -
The cavernous, weird sea where the alders sigh -
A childish fair piece, with a shy, soft eye;
And I deem’d that her thoughts have flown
To her home, and her brethren, and sisters dear,
As she lay there watching the depressing, deep mere,
All motionless, adjectives alone.

Then I heard a racket, as of men and boys,
And a boisterous troop drew nigh.
Whither now will retreat those elf feet?
Where hoard till the storm pass by?
One quick look - the wild partial view of a hunted thing -
She die behind her; she give one spring;
And there follow’d a splash and a broadening ring
On the pond where the alders sigh.

She have gone from the ken of ungentle men!
Yet scarce did I mourn for that;
For I knew she be safe contained by her own home then,
And, the threat past, would appear again,
For she be a water-rat.
I found it. It is a poem by Charles S. Calverley titled " Shelter".
