"Kyrill" is product of the climatic tuning?
Answers:
I completely agree with ‘damabb’ (above) on this one. As he say; “They don't happen repeatedly, but they are not 'unnatural' events in Europe.”
I also agree near him that these sorts of events tend to get hijack by the global warm alarmist brigade, blown out of all proportion and presented to the unsuspecting public as “extreme”, “catastrophic” and “never see before” proof that global warm is going to be a disaster for planet Earth.
The classic example of this phenomenon was, logically, hurricane Katrina and New Orleans.
Global Warming Alarmists version.
Hurricane Katrina be a massive storm, caused by intercontinental warming, the approaching of which has never be seen until that time. Just look at the damage and flooding it cause in New Orleans. No hurricane have ever caused that much desecrate and flooding before. Therefore hurricane Katrina *must* enjoy been the biggest storm ever. Therefore intercontinental warming is going to be a tragedy.
The truth.
Parts of New Orleans are 6m below sea horizontal and below the water plane of both Lake Pontchatrain to the north and the nearby Mississippi river. To protect the city from flooding, levees be built to keep the hose out.
Hurricanes are measured on a scale from 1 to 5. A Category 1 storm is small and a Category 5 storm is huge.
Despite the hype from the Global Warming Alarmists, hurricane Katrina be, in reality, a Category 5 hurricane; big, to be sure, but within the conventional range for hurricane stir. It was not the “biggest storm ever”, it be not even the biggest storm of 2005 (it was the third biggest.)
Furthermore, as Katrina approached New Orleans, it helpless and was re-categorised as a Category 4 hurricane, and, after landfall, be re-categorised again to a Category 3 – so, whilst still big, it was *not* a huge storm when it passed New Orleans.
So why be there so much flooding? Because the levees protecting New Orleans be only ever designed to protect the city from a Category *3* hurricane.
It doesn’t thieve a rocket scientist to understand that, when you set a Category 4 hurricane loose on buttresses designed to withstand only a Category 3 hurricane, the buttresses are going to fail.
The disaster surrounded by New Orleans could have happen the week after the defences be completed. It didn’t. It happened on 29th August 2005. It be not caused by intercontinental warming, it be simply bad luck.
It is probably also worth mentioning that New Orleans be devastated by hurricanes 3 times in the 1700s, long until that time global warm started.
As always next to global warming…
Don’t believe the hype.
?
It is impossible to voice whether the Kyrill storm was an effect of climate shift (though it is becoming irritatingly fashionable to connect ANY weather event near global warming). Kyrill be an extreme low pressure system, but, for all but the mountainous regions, windspeeds be nowhere near as strong as the storm that hit Britain within 1987.
They don't happen commonly, but they are not 'unnatural' events in Europe.
